Salma Hayek on Monday went into detail about her experience of shooting a romantic scene in her relaxing film Desperado, making it clear that her trauma has nothing to do with the director or the star.
The Oscar-nominated actor was dropped by Armchair Expert, a popular weekly podcast hosted by Dax Shepard and Monica Padman. Among the topics they discussed was Hayek’s first major holiday in Hollywood, which was the 1995 Desperado, directed by Robert Rodriguez and played by Antonio Banderas. Hayek had previously noted that he was struggling with the complexity of the romantic scene, but he opened the door to Shepard and Padman.
Excited about finding a place for Carolina as tough as nails in the Columbia film, Hayek said there was no mention of the love affair between her character and Banderas’s El Bachias in the document. It is delivered to him after the start of production.
Telling Shepard and Padman that Rodriguez was his “brother” and that his wife of the time, Elizabeth, was his “best friend”, Hayek agreed to the incident. It could be just four.
“So, when we were about to start shooting, I started to cry,” Hayek said, adding that he kept saying to three other people, “I don’t know what to do. I’m scared.”
He continued, “One of the things I was afraid of Antonio about – he was a perfect and very nice gentleman, and we were still very good friends – but he was relaxed. I was shocked that to him, it was nothing. And I was so embarrassed that I cried. “
Hayek made it clear several times that Rodriguez and Banders were “amazing” and that Rodriguez “did not pressure me,” but still, the moment was very sad and he remembered it well.
“I did not release the towel,” he said. “They were trying to make me laugh. I took it off for two seconds and started crying again. But we went through it. We did our best for what we could have done at the time.”
In the film, the scene of love is made up of quick cuts, with Hayek saying that it was the best thing he could do between starting and ending. “If you are not, you can do it. But I always think of my father and brother,” he explained of his obstacle. “And will they see it? And will they be ridiculed? The boys don’t have that thing. Your father will be, ‘Yes! That’s my son!’ “
Eventually, Hayek was going to take his father and brother to see the film, but he told them to leave the theater during the show and come back late, adding, “You want your dad to be proud of you.”
