Shahrukh Khan is a highly-acclaimed award-winning Indian film actor who works in Bollywood films, as well as a film producer and television host.

Khan began his career appearing in several television serials in the late 1980s. He made his film debut with the commercially successful Deewana (1992). Since then, he has been a part of numerous commercial successes and has delivered a variety of critically acclaimed performances. In 2008, Newsweek named him one of the 50 most powerful people in the world.

Personal life

Khan married Gauri Khan (who is a Hindu) in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony on 25 October 1991. They have three children, son Aryan Khan (born 1997), daughter Suhana (born 2000) and AbRam. According to Khan, while he strongly believes in Allah, he also values his wife’s religion. At home, his children follow both religions, with the Qur’an being kept next to the Hindu gods.

Awards and Honours

Khan has been awarded a number of honours. In April 2007, a life-size wax statue of Khan was installed at the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, London. During the same year, he was accorded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award by the French government for his “exceptional career”.

He was born to a well known poet of India, Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. He also has a brother named Ajitabh. He studied at Allahabad’s Jnana Prabodhini and Boys’ High School, and then he went to Nainital’s Sherwood College, where he majored in the arts stream. He later went on to study at Kirori Mal College of the University of Delhi and completed a Bachelor of Science degree.

He was cast in Saat Hindustani. He got a break in Bollywood after a letter of introduction from the Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, as he was a friend of her son Rajiv Gandhi. This is how he made his entry into Bollywood. He got married to Jaya Bhaduri. They have two children, Shweta and Abhishek.

Career

He made his debut in 1969 as a voice narrator in the film Bhuvan Shome. After that he got his first acting role as one of the seven protagonists in Saat Hindustani. This film did not do well but gave him his first National Film Award for Best Newcomer.

Then in the year 1971, he starred as a supporting actor in the film Anand, with Rajesh Khanna which again gave him a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. Then later that year he played his first negative role in Parwaana. After that he narrated a part of the film Bawarchi. He also made a guest appearance in the movie Guddi starring Jaya Bhaduri.

In the year 1973, he played the role of an inspector in the film Zanjeer. He was nominated for Best Actor for this movie. Later that year he married Jaya Bhaduri and made many films together. Then he starred in the film Namak Haraam for which he won his second Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.

Then in 1975, he starred in a comedy film Chupke Chupke. Then soon after he acted in films like Faraar and Mili. Then he starred in the film Deewar for which he was Nominated for Best Actor. It was a hit film of the year 1975, which was ranked at no. 4 in Indiatimes Movies. Later that year he acted in the film Sholay which became the highest-grossing film of all time in India, earning INR 2,36,45,00,000. It was decared as the “Film of the Millennium” by BBC India.

Then in 1979, he turned into a singer and sang a song for the film Mr. Natwarlal. He was again nominated for Filmfare Best Actor Award and also for Filmfare Best Male Playback Award. In 1979, he also received the Best Actor nomination for Kaala Patthar and then was nominated again in 1980 for the film Dostana. Dostana was declared to be the top-grossing film of the year 1980. He also acted in the film Shaan in 1980.

On 26 July 1982, while filming Coolie in the University Campus in Bangalore, Bachchan suffered a near fatal intestinal injury during the filming of a fight scene with co-actor Puneet Issar. He was performing his own stunts in the film where he had to fall on a table and then on the ground. While jumping on the table, his abdomen hit the corner of the table and he was injured.

Then he decided to take a break from films and entered the field of politics to support his long-time friend, Rajiv Gandhi. He contested from Allahabad’s against H. N. Bahuguna, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and won by one of the highest victory margins in general election history. Then after 3 years, he resigned. However, his resignation was followed by the involvement of Bachchan and his brother in the “Bofors scandal” by a newspaper, which he vowed to take to court. Bachchan was eventually found not guilty of involvement in the ordeal.

Again in 1988, he returned to Bollywood and made a film Shahenshah, which was a huge success. Then on in 1991, he made another film Hum which went on to become a hit and he won his third Filmfare Best Actor Award. After the release of Khuda Gawah in 1992, he made went into a semi retirement for around 5 years.

He now turned into a producer during his temporary retirement period and set up a company named Amitabh Bachchan Corporation, Ltd. (A.B.C.L.) in 1996. ABCL’s strategy was to introduce products and services covering the entire section of India’s entertainment industry. Soon after the company was launched, they produced a film Tere Mere Sapne which failed at the box office but launched the career of actor, Arshad Warsi.

Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan is an Indian film actress and politician.


Jaya Bhaduri was born in Jabalpur to a Bengali Hindu family. Her mother is Indira Bhaduri and her father, Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, was a writer, journalist, and stage artist. She did her schooling from St. Joseph’s Convent Sr. Sec. School, Bhopal and was the head girl of her school. She was awarded the Best All-India N.C.C. Then their lives were disrupted when Amitabh was seriously injured by a blow from actor, Puneet Issar while filming ‘Coolie’, which almost took his life.
